Well, it’s been a crazy 12 months to say the least. The last of our children graduated from college and started paying their own bills (sort of.) I sold my business and retired after a 34 year career as a financial planner/investment advisor. We built a new home across the country in Mesquite, Nevada and then bought a custom off grid ready campervan to keep there. Amy Jo retired after a 32 year career as a high school math teacher. We sold our home of 25 years in Clearwater, Florida, said our goodbyes, and then moved across the country to a beautiful little town where we know absolutely no one. Yes, we are crazy!
The germ of this idea actually started in January 2020. I had just finished two months of treatment for prostate cancer away from home and was really looking forward jumping back in to my financial planning practice with renewed vigor. However, the COVID-19 pandemic had a different plan. I was very fortunate in that, unlike others, my business didn’t suffer, however, I suffered from a terminal case of extreme boredom. I was of the opinion that I would work into my late 60’s, mostly because I really loved my profession, but the leisurely pace of 8 weeks in cancer treatment served to kindle the idea that maybe I really wouldn’t mind being retired. The pandemic only fanned the embers of that idea. By the end of 2021, it became a raging forest fire when my youngest daughter decided that she wouldn’t be coming to work at the family firm. That’s it! I’m out!
The plan is that we will be splitting time between Mesquite, traveling the country in our RV and/or traveling internationally. I’m optimistically planning 1-2 posts per week to keep everyone apprised of our adventures. A few trips are in the planning stages now. We are heading down to Parker, Arizona this weekend to do a shakeout on the van as well as visit some friends who have been full time RVers since 2008. In May, we’ll be heading for Maine (my home state) on a route yet to be determined. And there will be many more adventures!
After overhearing Amy Jo telling several people, “I’m sure Scott’s going to write a blog about our trips.”, here we are. I hope you enjoy it!
